Teaching Philosophy
Through my experiences thus far, I have come to find several practices that have had a pattern of success in my teaching. I continue to learn every day for the benefit of my students and to ensure that their best academic and personal potential are achieved. I believe that there are three principles a teacher must provide to ensure a positive and successful learning experience for their students:
Make learning meaningful: Students thrive with content when they can answer the question, “Why do I need to know this?”. Making connections to the real world helps bridge the gap between the classroom and student’s lives. When teachers create transparent parallels between our students’ two worlds, students will naturally retain content while applying them with meaningful connections.
Differentiate instruction: Every student learns differently. As a teacher, one must always be thinking of way to improve learning and teaching styles to fit individual’s academic level, strategy, and pace. Although this might be the most difficult task for teachers, especially with classroom sizes on a rise, it is essential for students to know that their teacher is putting effort towards assisting their needs and bringing out their strengths.
Understand social and academic aspects of learning go hand in hand: I am strong believer that it is just as important for a student to have the tools to be a positive and successful contributor to a community as it for them to have strong content learned. For me, it is essential to have a comfortable learning environment with a strong classroom community. Students must be taught moral conduct in the same priority as their ABCs.
To be successful at implementing these principles, teachers must embody these three characteristics;
Be enthusiastic: Presenting the material in a fun, exciting manner will have students engaged and wanting to learn more. The more you show your students that the material is worth learning and can be fun and exciting, the more they will want to learn.
Be consistent: Students have a thirst for consistency. They desire a routine and an environment that can be predictable in some way, but still keeps them on their toes with engaging activities. As a teacher, one must stay consistent with all aspects of the classroom. Consistency will help students stay focused and gain responsibility for their own learning.
Be caring: Students look for a caring nature in the classroom. They need to know that their teacher genuinely cares about them and their learning. Going above and beyond for your students might leave a lasting impression on them and you might just be that teacher that changes their lives.
By providing these principles and embodying these characteristics as a teacher I will create a positive and engaging learning environment for my students.
